Minimally regulated electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) advertising may be one potential factor driving the increasing prevalence of young adult e-cigarette use. Using eye-
tracking, the current study examined which e-cigarette advertising features were the most appealing to young adults as a first step to examine how e-cigarette advertising may be regulated.
Methods
Using a within-subjects design, 30 young adults (Mage = 20.0 years) viewed ecigarette ads in a laboratory. Ad features or areas of interest (AOIs) included: 1) brand logo, 2) product descriptor, and 3) people. During ad viewing, eye-tracking measured participants’ dwell time and time to first fixation for each AOI as well as each ad brand. Harm perceptions pre- and post-viewing were measured.
Results
Participants spent the longest dwell time on people (M = 2701 ms), then product descriptors (M = 924 ms), then brand logos (M = 672 ms; ps < .001). They also fixated fastest on AOIs in that order. Participant sex significantly impacted dwell time of ad brand, and harm perceptions decreased after viewing the ads (ps < .05).
Conclusions
This study provides initial evidence about which e-cigarette ad features may appeal most to young adults and may be useful when designing evidence-based policy.

The total population of licensed Ohio nurse-midwives (n = 300) was surveyed by using a cross-sectional survey design. Only 4 of 10 items that assessed a nationally recommended method of promoting smoking cessation were done by 50% or more of respondents. Few nurse-midwives identified barriers to counseling pregnant patients who smoked, but the most common were lack of time (14%) and not knowing where to send pregnant smokers for treatment (14%). Most respondents believed that nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) would be most likely to reduce the number of pregnant smokers (74%), yet few (26%) were confident in their ability to prescribe/recommend nicotine replacement therapy. Respondents more likely to use 5 A's can be characterized as the following: had higher efficacy expectations in their ability to communicate issues about the 5 A's and had higher outcome expectations regarding the effects of using the 5 A's. Nurse-midwife training programs and continuing education needs to include current research in nicotine replacement therapy use in pregnant patients and 5 A's techniques to assist pregnant smokers in quitting. In this study, we examined the fulfilment of this essential consistency condition for the ECX-Joyetech E-Vic Mini (ECX),a piece of computerized exposure equipment manufactured by SCIREQ, which has been employed by numerous in vivo testing. We began by calibrating the customary Evic VTC mini device mod and the 4 coils available, reproducing in the laboratory the operation of the ECX in the power-control and temperature-control modes, using puffing parameters recommended by its documentation. We then conducted the following tests for each coil: (1) verifying whether the generated aerosols satisfy an optimal operational regime, free from overheating, as determined by a linear relation between the mass of vaporized e-liquid vs. supplied power and (2) obtaining the mean yields of aldehydes for each of the tested power settings and coils. The results of these tests show that, under the main conditions used in in vivo testing, the ECX equipment fails to comply with these consistency requirements, especially for coils with low subohm resistance, a shortcoming that can be corrected by applying much larger airflows for these coils. Therefore, the outcomes of preclinical studies using the ECX equipment should be examined with great scepticism and subjected to further testing. [TABAC] étudeIndex. décimale : TA 0.3.4 Infirmiers,-ères Résumé : Objective : to explore barriers to and possibilities for interactive communication between midwives and pregnant women regarding smoking behaviour during pregnancy.
Design : the study was based on a qualitative research design aiming at a Grounded Theory analysis of interviews with pregnant women.
Setting : public sector antenatal clinics in Cape Town, South Africa predominantly providing care to women of mixed ancestry.
Informants : in-depth interviews with 12 pregnant women purposively selected on the basis of smoking behaviour, age and marital status to reach maximum variation.
Findings : the findings indicated low levels of transparency and trust in antenatal visits. Lack of trust was related to categories such as conflicting personal capabilities and socio-cultural and medical expectations, combined with a didactic approach from caregivers. The unworthy woman was identified as the core category of the interviews describing how women feel in their relationship with midwives. A theoretical model illustrates possibilities for change in relation to an ideal situation where a supportive caregiver, congruent expectations and capabilities result in women feeling visible.
Key conclusions and implications for practice : culturally appropriate smoking cessation interventions should be of high priority. Training in patient-centred counselling for midwives is necessary for creating an open dialogue with pregnant mothers about their smoking habits. The time constraint experienced by midwives also suggests that other methods apart from midwife counselling should be investigated for inclusion in the clinical setting.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=7502 Exemplaires (1)

[TABAC] tabagisme:effet du tabac:effet psychiatrique:dépressionIndex. décimale : TA 6.4 Prévision et pronostic Résumé : Aims
To examine whether mood, personality and coping predict smoking cessation and whether the associations of personality and coping are mediated through depressed mood. Setting Multicenter (n = 8) smoking cessation trial. Participants A total of 600 smokers ( 15 cigarettes/day) without current depressionwho participated in a smoking cessation study.
Measurements
The outcome was continuous abstinence during the last 4 weeks of the 3-month trial: depressed mood was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), personality by the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and coping by the Revised Ways of Coping Checklist (RWCC).
Findings
A total of 14.7% (88/600) were abstainers. Controlling for potential confounders, baseline BDI independently predicted smoking cessation. Smokers with BDI 10 were less likely to quit than those with BDI < 10 (odds ratio: 6.39, 95% CI: 1.44–28.3, P = 0.01). Compared to BDI < 10 smokers, BDI 10 smokers had significantly higher scores for neuroticism and lower scores for extraversion and conscientiousness (NEO-PI-R). On the RWCC, BDI 10 smokers scored higher for blame self, wishful thinking and problem avoidance and they scored lower on problem focus than smokers with BDI < 10. A mediational analysis showed that neither personality traits nor coping skills predicted directly smoking cessation. However, low level of problem focusing and social support seeking predicted a negative outcome via depressed mood.
Conclusion
A BDI score 10, even in smokers who do not meet a current diagnosis of major depression, directly predicts inability to quit. This suggests the utility of assessing depression symptoms in routine smoking cessation care.

The deleterious health effects of tobacco smoking on mental health and other components of overall wellbeing have been well documented. Though the side effects of electronic cigarettes (ECs) need further investigation, ECs are widely gaining popularity and are chiefly marketed as a safer alternative to conventional cigarette smoking. This study assessed the predictors of
electronic cigarette use as well as its association with mental health among residents of Lagos state, Nigeria.
METHODS
This was a cross-sectional study which employed the use of a validated interviewer-administered questionnaire, among participants aged ≥18 years. The survey had six sections: sociodemographic information, smoking and lifestyle characteristics, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), knowledge and attitude about e-cigarettes, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done using sociodemographic variables and clinical variables, to identify factors associated with poor knowledge, negative attitude, and predictors of e-cigarette use. A p<0.05 was considered significant.
RESULTS
Data from 898 participants were analyzed; the respondents were predominantly male (65.1%) and the mean age was 33.00 ± 18.38 years. A total of 117 persons (13.1%) were electronic cigarette (EC) users, and the mean duration of EC use was 11.99 ±14.25 months. Amongst EC users, the factors associated with use were socializing (30.8%) and conventional tobacco smoking cessation (15.4%). The majority (56.2%) of the study participants had good knowledge of ECs while 52.9% had a negative attitude. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between poor knowledge and negative attitude about ECs use, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and susceptibility to smoking. Depression was also a strong predictor of e-cigarette use.
CONCLUSIONS
This study found that cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes and depression were strong predictors of EC use. Policymakers in Nigeria should consider forging policies which aim at ensuring correct information dissemination on ECs in the media, and discourage the use of ECs by social vapers.
